Day 7: Wednesday - October 13th

About mid morning I caught the N to Church Street and then took the J down to 24 Street. Here are some photos from my walk around the 24th and Mission/Valencia area.

Pretty classy. This reminded me of my very own HippyMobile that Joss had embellished. It is long gone now but it sure turned some heads when it was on the road.

At 3351 23rd Street I passed the Horace Mann Middle School. Since every blank wall is a potential canvas this one was being illuminated with portraits of local heroes.

These two were admiring the portraits and I stepped in for a closer look. The young girl said to me: "Did you know she (pointing to the woman next to her) is up there?" And she then pointed to the portrait on the wall. I asked the woman if she would pose for me next to her portrait and she graciously agreed to.

Although this street vendor was hawking these as "churros", they are actually "porras".

Churros, sometimes referred to as a Spanish doughnut, are fried-dough pastry-based snacks, sometimes made from potato dough, that originated in Spain. They are also popular in Latin America, France, Portugal, Morocco, the United States, Australia, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean islands. There are two types of churros in Spain. One is thin (and usually knotted) and the other, especially popular in Madrid, is long and thick (porra). They both are normally eaten for breakfast dipped in hot chocolate.

I saw these little cuties and had to buy a few.

Although the Yelpsters are divided on this place, I think I will give it a try at some point.

Everyone raves about the margaritas at the Velvet. Many like the food as well.

I made my way back to the Sunset, got cleaned up and then went out for dinner. When last at The Social I had seen an interesting salad on the menu and wanted to try it. It was the "Hanger Steak Cobb Salad" and it sounded pretty tasty.

I have to say I have never had a poached egg on top of a salad before and I did not care for it that much. The rest was great, but overall the salad was overpriced at 14 bucks. For that money it should have had a lot more steak and been a much larger portion.

The unassuming store front of the Social Kitchen and Brewery at 1326 9th Avenue.

Just a few doors up the street is the Oriental Art Gallery. They had some interesting figurines in the window.

From here I hoofed it up to Grandview to take in the sunset.

To the right is the tip of the Mt. Sutro forest and downtown in the distance.

I left the park via the 14th Avenue Tile Steps and grabbed one last shot before heading back to Ed's place and night-night.
