The Israeli settlement of Netzarim was created as a kibbutz in 1984 (the kibbutz split a few years later in order to become a village). The 60 family village was often refered to in the media as a stronghold for religious radicals. The settlement was the last to be evacuated in the August 2005 withdrawal of the Gaza Strip ordered by the government of Ariel Sharon.

The first attack of the second intifada happened there on September 27, 2000.

Netzarim was finally, peacefully evacuated on August 22, 2005 by the Israel Defense Forces. Its evacuation marks the end of a 38-year-long Israeli presence on the Gaza Strip.
