This article is about a river. There is also a town called Segura in the province of Guipúzcoa, northern Spain.

Segura (Latin Thader, Arabic War-Alabiat, Spanish Segura) is a medium-sized river in southeastern Spain.

It starts at Santiago Pontones (province of Jaén), passes Calasparra, Cieza, Murcia, Orihuela, Rojales and ends in the Mediterranean Sea near Guardamar del Segura in the province of Alicante. Some of its tributaries are the Mundo River (which starts near Riopar), the Alhárabe (which starts in Moratalla), the Mula and the Guadalentín.

The Segura River is an unpredictable river which occasionally floods. In the twentieth century significant flooding occurred in 1946, 1948, 1973, 1982, 1988 and 1989. Since 1990 the lower reaches of the river have been canalised removing meanders hence improving the evacuation of flood waters. The new canal was put to the test in September of 1997 when heavy rainfall resulted in significant runoff.

The alluvial plain is called the "Vega del Segura" which is a very productive agricultural region growing a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The Vegas are divided into three areas: Alta, Media & Baja. The Segura was one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. However, in recent years extensive water management techniques and the implemantation of waste water treatment plants have greatly improved the situation. What must be considered is that the mean dicharge is around 2 - 3 CUMECS in Murcia city making it very difficult to dilute illegal polutants.
