Obdulio Varela is a Uruguayan football player. He captained the national team to world cup glory in 1950 against Brazil. He is renowned as one of the greatest old-fashioned attacking centre halves, a midfield player equally adept in defence as in creating scoring chances for his forwards. He retired from the national team after World Cup 1954. He was unable to play in the semi-final due to injury, and Uruguay lost the so-called "Match of the Century" 4-2 to the outstanding Hungarian team. Varela never lost a World Cup match.
