With Alfred M. Baily and Fred G. Brandenburg of the Colorado Museum of Natural Histroy.

Trip from Denver to a point beyond Grover Colo. Which is just below the boundary where Wyoming Nebraska and Colorado meet. In the party were Fred Brandenberg Alf. Bailey myself. A distance of nearly 150 miles northeast of Denver. The ground covered was all plains and short grass prairie except where where an impressive butte rose from the flat country. The west face of this escarpment was our destination in quest of our eagle's aerie to photograph the young and old birds at the nest. Typical birds observed were the Desert Horned Lark, Mountain Plover (a bird whose nest I had the good fortune to see. The story goes that only about 10 ornithologists in the country have seen this bird's nest).

  1. Say's Phoebe
  2. Rock Wren
  3. Lark Sparrow
  4. Western Chipping Sparrow
  5. Golden Eagle
  6. Prairie Falcon

It is worth mentioning that on this excursion 70 examples of the White Rumped Shrike were counted. A total list of birds observed:

Redtailed Hawk & Ferruginous Rough Leg were Starlings (?) identified by Bailey. Also he noted White Throated Swifts while hidden in his "blind."

Mammals:

+One point worth mentioning is the pheasants were so plentiful that they were a nuisance along the highways.

There is a hand drawn map in the journal showing approximate location

Today's trip covered some 60 miles from Denver to. Sullivan Dam.

Idledale over Grapvine Road to Mt. Vernon Canyon down to the Hogbacks to Denver.

As usual Colorado's variety of associations and conditions offer the bird enthusiast constant pleasure and surprises. The prairies streams & lakesaltitude carry an important factory in bringing out differences in tree plant and animal life.

With such variations and the working of new territory surprises are continuously in store. I will try to divide the list so as to make distinctions in associations & altitude. It must be kept in mind the first part of this list is Upper Sonoran of two associations of the plains with it's lakes, marshes, sedges and cattails; the hack berry, cottonwood, willow association bringing about a change in certain additional species.

This trip a young prairie falcon was taken-shot in right wing-by Karl Cerveny. The bird was not shot for the sheer joy of killing on target practice by any means.

The victim was immediately packed and shipped to Geo. Sutton, Curator of Birds, Cornell University. Sutton is in need of such a species for skeletal structure. An account of this event may be given in detail in this journal if time and circumstances permit.

On route 85 north to some 5 or 6 mi. south of the Wyoming border in Weld Co. Colorado Our surroundings were typical prairie country with some of the sections having irrigation. Occasional willows were seen where the moisture made its effects felt. Again my lack of botony has hindered me in working out ecological differences so that my notes and observations could be more complete.

Mr. Bailey, Fred Brandenburg and I left Denver at 7:30 AM and rolled northward to the scene of our photographic ventures. Two of the Longspur nests Fred and "the Boss" had spotted before were either abandoned or tampered with, one nest was empty, the other left with four cold eggs. Two more though, one of the McCown's, one of the Chestnut-Collared Longspurs each contained four young about old enough to make their own journey thru life. Some very good movies were taken of these adults as individuals and in the task of assuming their parental duties.

"Shots" were also taken of a prairie rattler who performed well before the camera particularly made our efforts worthwhile when it struck at inflated colored balloons tied to a sapling. This snake had been a captive of some other owner before we made him cinema conscious. However, another rattler who had made his existence out on the wild prairie did not remain so docile as Mr. Bailey was taking specimens of rabbits. Old "Buzz Tail" gave no warning as he stabbed viciously for Bailey's legs. Luckily a strand of fence wire intervened and the snake's fangs "pinged" harmlessly on the metal. Several well put shots snuffed out the huge writhing one's life. Bailey said it was the largest one of its kind that he had ever seen. Wish now I had measured it. I always think of things too late.

It must be mentioned too that on this warm light airy day at 9:45 AM. I estimated that 20 Nighthawks were in flight feeding. It may be logical the hard rains the previous night prevented their taking a usual meal. Still 6 or 8 other were perched atop fence posts along the highway. Six others were counted on the way home in the evening, one of these nesting horizontally on a apple tree limb that was dead or stripped of its foliage.

My birds list for this occasion is divided into the Denver and Adams counties species and the birds listed in the portion of the Weld County section we were working.

Also I took two horned toads.
