East Los Angeles (often shortened to East L.A. or East Los) is an unincorporated area located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The community is bounded by the Boyle Heights neighborhood of the city of Los Angeles to the west, the unincorporated area of City Terrace to the northwest, the city of Monterey Park to the northeast, the city of Montebello to the east, and the city of Commerce to the south. As of the 2000 census, this area had a total population of 124,283. East Los Angeles is represented by Gloria Molina in the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Geography
East Los Angeles is located at 34°1'53" North, 118°10'7" West (34.031462, -118.168653)GR1. East Los Angeles lies directly east of downtown Los Angeles.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²). 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 124,283 people, 29,844 households, and 25,068 families residing in the community. The population density is 6,449.7/km² (16,697.4/mi²). There are 31,096 housing units at an average density of 1,613.7/km² (4,177.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 39.26% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 1.29% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 54.01% from other races, and 4.22% from two or more races. 96.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino; Hispanics or Latinos can be of any race.
There are 29,844 households out of which 51.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% are married couples living together, 21.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.0% are non-families. 12.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.15 and the average family size is 4.42.
In the community the population is spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 14.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 101.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.2 males.
The median income for a household in the community is $28,544, and the median income for a family is $29,755. Males have a median income of $21,065 versus $18,475 for females. The per capita income for the community is $9,543. 27.2% of the population and 24.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.0% of those under the age of 18 and 13.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Education
East Los Angeles is split between Los Angeles Unified School District and Montebello Unified School District.
Trivia
Both the song and film Born in East L.A. by Cheech Marin could either be about the unincorporated community of East Los Angeles, or the East Los Angeles region.
