Monday, October 4th

Although it was another beautiful, sunny day today, I spent most of it inside. Other than going up to Farley's at 6:30 this AM to upload web files and answer email I did not leave the apartment until late afternoon. The daily pounding of the pavement has been taking it's toll on my feet and knees so I decided to give them a much needed rest.

Restlessness and hunger got me out around 4:00 and I boarded the 22 and got off at Mission and 16th. My destination was to be Udupi Palace at 1007 Valencia near 21st Street. Email conversations with my long time friend Bill from Dinwiddie, Virginia convinced me it was time to try a little curry.

While walking up Mission to Valencia Streets I passed by this street sign. I am sure I have must have passed it before and taken note of it.

In 1968, my oldest sister Joan was living with Julian in Morgantown. He, along with several others, were instrumental in engineering the " Great Escape" - our Exodus from Morgantown WV to San Francisco.

This bike was parked on Valencia Street and the sign says to jiggle the handle bars to have your picture taken. The photos can then be viewed at www.flickr.com/amits_bike. Crazy.

Here is my supper stop, the Udupi Palace (1007 Valencia St between 21st & Hill Streets). They serve southern Indian vegetarian food here.

Although I like curry and I have several curry dishes I make at home, restaurant curry always tastes pretty much the same to me.

I had ordered fresh vegetables cooked in a curry and coconut sauce. I ordered it "medium" heat. Boy, was I glad I did. It was right at my limit of tolerance . Whew!

As seen here it came with rice, poori, raita and papad and some pieces of what tasted like pickled citrus. I enjoyed the meal and washed it all down with about 5 glasses of water. The raita helped squelch the fire but not the heart burn afterwards.

Afterwards, I walked up to 24th and then hung a left to get back down to Mission Street. The late afternoon sun did a nice job of lighting things up.

I thought this was an interesting contrast of architectural styles. Although to say the bank building had any style at all would be stretching it.

I thought these looked like some form of bizarre sea life.

Skins, anyone?

In an effort to satisfy the eternal quest for individualization through peripherals, this vendor was offering 100's of different styles of cell phone skins.

I'd like to know the story behind this building. It's style was different from anything else I can remember seeing on the section of Mission between 16th and 24th.

I once again boarded the 22 and was back about 6:00. I had a couple of beers to settle my stomach and then PBSed it the rest of the evening.
