• Algiers charter schools to open Dec. 14
Five charter schools in Algiers will open Dec. 14, the schools' newly hired academic director announced Tuesday, if they get a nod from the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education today.

• Subdivision seeks flood safeguard
After flooding from Hurricane Katrina swamped dozens of homes in a Harvey subdivision, a Jefferson Parish councilman has asked state lawmakers and Congress to help the parish buy a nearby defunct golf course to create a retention pond at Woodland West.

• Katrina worker is electrocuted
A South Carolina man died Tuesday night after apparently being electrocuted in Waggaman, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

• In the Katrina chaos, Jeff took property by storm
When the 17th Street Canal levee crumbled, Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard couldn't go to the Home Depot to buy materials to staunch the flood encroaching from New Orleans. What he could do, under the sweeping emergency authority provided by state law, was raid the Lafarge Construction Materials plant at 3320 Airline Drive for sand, concrete blocks and heavy equipment to build a dam at Airline and Severn Avenue.

• Students still can escape 'failing' schools
Despite the financial and logistical headaches Hurricane Katrina has created for the Jefferson Parish public school system, students in schools deemed failing by the state still are being allowed to transfer to higher-performing schools.

• School scores show signs of growth
Although the majority of Jefferson Parish public schools posted some growth on state performance scores, less than half reached their academic targets in the 2004-2005 school year, according to the latest round of state scores released Thursday.

• State may take over 104 N.O. schools
If the Legislature goes along with Gov. Kathleen Blanco's plan to take over substandard schools in New Orleans as the city rebuilds, more than 100 schools would become the responsibility of the state, according to the latest test scores released Thursday by the state Department of Education.

• Gretna man shot, left in street
A Gretna man was in critical condition after being shot Thursday morning, Gretna police reported.

Medical workers, law enforcement officers and firefighters dislodged from their homes by Hurricane Katrina may soon settle into a plastic community of modular homes that Jefferson Parish is preparing at the Louisiana Coca-Cola Bottling Co. plant in Elmwood.

Layoffs loom for Jeff schools
Faced with a potential $60 million deficit from its once-flush coffers, the Jefferson Parish public school system will begin warning its roughly 7,000 employees this week of possible layoffs stemming from Hurricane Katrina's damage to the parish's economy.

Storms lop 100 miles off coastline
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita shredded or sank at least 100 square miles of marshland along Louisiana's fragile coastline, federal scientists announced Wednesday, further exposing the region to powerful storms rolling off the Gulf of Mexico and destroying some of the most productive marine habitat in the country.

Terrytown tenants are ordered to pay back rent
Tenants of Louisbourg Square apartments in Terrytown will have until Monday to pay back rent and avoid eviction, but how safe the storm-damaged complex is remains to be settled.
