Salman Khan (Urdu: سلمان خان, Devanāgarī: सलमान ख़ान, born December 27, 1965) is a Bollywood movie star. He rose to fame with the surprise hit film Maine Pyar Kiya and followed up with successful films such as Sajan, Andaz Apna Apna, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Salman was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, into a family with strong ties to the film industry. His father Salim Khan is a successful screenplay writer. One of Salim Khan's wives (he has two) is the famous dancer Helen. Salman's brothers Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan are also actors, if not as successful as Salman. Salman has has two younger sisters, one married to actor Atul Agnihotri.

Salman has been in the news for some controversial reasons:

  • He was charged with hunting an endangered species, the Blackbuck.
  • He was arrested for drunk driving and vehicular homicide. He lost control of his car and killed three people who had been sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk.
  • The media had a field day with his romantic misadventures (a rocky romance with actress Aishwarya Rai, now ended).
  • He was accused of trying to force his then-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai, to appear at several events sponsored by the Mumbai underworld, threatening her and boasting of his connections to organized crime. The "evidence" was a tape of a mobile phone call, later proved to be a fake.

The star's fans insist that his image as Bollywood's "bad boy" is just media hype. He, though quietly, supports many charities and is a frequent visitor to old-age homes and cancer hospitals. He is said to be generous and supportive to his friends and family. He worked on Phir Milenge, the first Indian film on the AIDS/HIV epidemic, without accepting a fee for his work.

After almost twenty years in the industry, he is still regarded as one of the top actors in Bollywood. People still say that the industry is ruled by the so-called "three Khans" (Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan).
