Poonch is a district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, in India. It has a total area of 855 square kilometers and lies in avery hilly region. The district is divided into three tehsils. It is bounded by Bagh district to the north, Sudhnuti to the south, and shares borders with occupied Kashmir in the east and Pakistan in the west. The total population of the district according to 1998-census stands at 412,000.

Poonch was ruled by the Muslim Rajas of Loran until 1837, when it fell into the hands of Raja Faiz Talab Khan of Rahuri. In 1846, it was handed over to Mahrajah Gulab Singh, after the Treaty of Amritsar. He inturn handed over Poonch and some other areas to his nephews, Jawahar Singh and Moti Singh with some legal stipulations. Poonch was annexed and converted into a Jagir by Mahrajah Hari Singh in 1935-36 after deposing the Raja of Poonch.
