the Northwest

Red states show the core of the Northwest, states shown as pink may or may not be included in the Northwest, and thus their inclusion or exclusion varies from source to source.

Northwestern United States comprises the Pacific Northwest and the western Great Plains regions of the United States, and generally includes the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. Like the Southwestern United States, the idea of what comprised the Northwest was pushed farther west over time. The original Northwest comprised the Northwest Territory and gradually pushed across the Midwest to its current definition.
