The song
"Material Girl" was penned by both Peter Brown and Robert Rans, and was produced by Nile Rodgers. Other credits are as follows:
- Written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans.
- Produced by Nile Rodgers.
- Bass by Bernard Edwards.
- Guitar, Synclavier II, Juno 60 by Nile Rodgers.
- Drums by Tony Thompson.
- Background vocals by Madonna, Curtis King, Frank Simms and George Simms.
"Material Girl" was one of the first examples of Madonna's multi-layered messages. While the lyrics give one message about materialism, the video gives the song a different meaning, one of immaterialism and pure love. Unfortunately, like the men in the video, the critics didn't seem to get the real message and accused Madonna of promoting materialism and selfishness.
Madonna often remarks that it is the song she regrets recording most, not because of its timeless lyrics and catchy rhythm, but for the fact that the nickname "Material Girl" stuck to her.
The video
In the song's music video, Madonna mimicked Marilyn Monroe, and the song evokes, as well as parodies, the materialistic and consumerist attitudes of the 1980s.
The video was shot in Los Angeles, produced by Sharon Oreck and directed by Mary Lambert.
Chart success
"Material Girl" became another top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and another #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play. It had a less-favorable run on the R&B chart this time, however, only barely making it into the top 50.
Internationally, the song went top 5 in the UK, Canada and Australia, among other countries.

"Material Girl" was Madonna's 3rd #1 single on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play
