Kingston is a town located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,862.

Kingston was organized as a town in 1694 when it separated from the town of Hampton. It was the fifth town to be established in New Hampshire and originally called "King's Town," probably named by settlers from Kingston, Massachusetts.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.1 km² (20.9 mi²). 50.8 km² (19.6 mi²) of it is land and 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.03% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,862 people, 2,122 households, and 1,633 families residing in the town. The population density is 115.4/km² (298.7/mi²). There are 2,265 housing units at an average density of 44.6/km² (115.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.97% White, 0.22% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,122 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% are non-families. 17.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $61,522, and the median income for a family is $66,509. Males have a median income of $42,256 versus $31,210 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,795. 2.5% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line.
