Greenville is a city located in Washington County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 41,633. It is the county seat of Washington County6. Greenville is also the largest city in Mississippi north of the I-20 corridor.

Greenville was named after American Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene.

Greenville was the birthplace of singer Mary Wilson of The Supremes, author Shelby Foote, Muppets creator Jim Henson and pro-baseball player Frank White.

Geography

Greenville is located at 33°23'55" North, 91°2'54" West (33.398577, -91.048356)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 71.6 km² (27.7 mi²). 69.6 km² (26.9 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.82% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 41,633 people, 14,784 households, and 10,422 families residing in the city. The population density is 598.0/km² (1,548.8/mi²). There are 16,251 housing units at an average density of 233.4/km² (604.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 28.92% White, 69.60% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,784 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% are married couples living together, 27.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.34.

In the city the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,928, and the median income for a family is $30,788. Males have a median income of $29,801 versus $20,707 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,992. 29.6% of the population and 25.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.2% of those under the age of 18 and 23.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

There is a small Jewish population of approximatly 5 families. They are the remnants of a much larger community that numbered in the hundreds at its peak. There is still a synagogue in Greenvill which is the only Orthodox synagogue in the state of Mississippi
