Elmwood is a census-designated place located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, within the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,270. Elmwood was part of neighboring Jefferson's census area from 1960 to 1990.

Elmwood is located at 29°57'23" North, 90°11'10" West (29.956455, -90.186098)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.3 km² (4.0 mi²). 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,270 people, 2,602 households, and 850 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 448.0/km² (1,159.0/mi²). There are 2,928 housing units at an average density of 307.2/km² (794.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 80.40% White, 11.62% African American, 0.35% Native American, 4.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. 5.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,602 households out of which 11.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 24.8% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 67.3% are non-families. 55.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.62 and the average family size is 2.47.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 10.1% under the age of 18, 15.6% from 18 to 24, 50.1% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $42,146, and the median income for a family is $61,176. Males have a median income of $41,352 versus $36,693 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $34,329. 13.3% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 13.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
