The Interstate Highway system is still being expanded. Various plans have been proposed:

Interstate 3

Interstate 3, the Third Infantry Division Highway, was proposed in the 2005 highway funding bill (Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users) to run from Savannah, Georgia north to Knoxville, Tennessee. The routing was legislated in the bill, although no designation was legislated. The proposed number is I-3, which does not fit into the Interstate Highway numbering system (although few logical options exist). The number was chosen to honor the United States Army Third Infantry Division.

Interstate 7 or 9

Interstate 9 has been proposed by Caltrans for California State Route 99 in central California, from the split with I-5 north to Stockton (where it would turn west on SR 4 to end at I-5). Interstate 7 has also been suggested. [1]

Interstate 14

Interstate 14 was included in the 2005 highway funding bill (Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users), to run from Natchez, Mississippi east to Augusta, Georgia. Further extensions might take it west to Austin, Texas and east to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

With recent hurricanes, particularly Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Katrina causing serious damage to I-10, the route has been deemed even more necessary as an alternate route in the inland Deep South. [2]

Interstate 22

Main article: Interstate 22

Interstate 22 is the planned number for US 78 between Memphis, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama. Most of the freeway has been built. Signage has been installed designating it as a "Future" Interstate as of 2005, and completion is expected by 2011.

Interstate 41

The Interstate 41 number was assigned to present US 41 between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Green Bay, Wisconsin in the 2005 highway funding bill (Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users). This would be only the second instance of a U.S. and Interstate highway with the same number sharing the same road (the I-74/US 74 multiplex in North Carolina is the other.).

Interstate 67

Interstate 67 is a proposed refurbishment of US 219 (also known as Continental One) through Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia, intended to shorten the driving distance between Toronto, Ontario and the southern United States. It would incorporate the already existing freeway between West Seneca, New York and Springville, New York and bring the remaining portions of US 219 in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia up to interstate standards. It would be a serious break with the current interstate numbering system as the highway would be east of Interstate 79 and west of Interstate 81 (and just west of Interstate 99). Construction has been delayed for many years due to lack of funding as well as the increased expense of building a major highway through some of the most heavily mountainous regions of the Eastern United States.

Three other proposals have been made for an Interstate 67, an upgrade of US 31 in Indiana between Indianapolis and South Bend, continuing northward via the US 31 freeway north to Benton Harbor, Michigan, and going northward from there along existing Interstate 196; the US 131 freeway northward from the Indiana Toll Road intersection near Middlebury, Indiana to Interstate 75 in northern lower Michigan (perhaps joining with the US 127 freeway (which in and of itself may eventually become part of Interstate 73) south of Grayling, Michigan); and an upgrade of US 231 in Alabama and Florida between Montgomery, Alabama and an intersection with Interstate 10 near Cottondale, Florida.
