Many of the lift bridges are beutifully maintained by local volunteers. There are bridge decorating competitions so it was not unusual to see bridges with nice paint detail, flags and flower baskets.
These bidges, even when raised to allow boat passage could still be accessed and used by pedestrians. Horses and cars have to wait.
